The trip to Naples will lead us to discover a city that buzzes with history and life and surprises for its amazing beauty.
Among the alleys and neighborhoods of the Neapolitan city we will admire internationally famous works of art and then go to a unique place in the world: the Roman city of Pompei, crystallized over time by the eruption of Vesuvius in 79 A.D.
The historical center of Naples is the testimony of the historical-artistic evolution of the city, from the Greek age to the Baroque era.
In its heart the ancient Monumental Complex of Santa Chiara rises: a Franciscan Citadel with two convents, one feminine for the poor Clares and the other masculine for the Friars Minor Franciscans.
The church is still present in its original Gothic forms, with a simple façade in which a magnificent perforated rose window is embedded. Streets, squares, churches and monuments are a treasure chest of exceptional significance.
We will visit the Pio Monte della Misericordia, seat of one of the most ancient and active secular charitable institutions of the city, which houses a seventeenth-century church where the canvas of the Seven Works of Mercy by Caravaggio is conserved, among the most important paintings of the period.
The Chapel, the monumental staircase that reaches the Quadreria, the Library and the hosted Associations tell more than four centuries of history.
The Metropolitan Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta is an overlap of several styles ranging from the pure Gothic of the fourteenth century to the nineteenth-century neogothic, a monumental basilica and Cathedral of Naples that rises in a characteristic square surrounded by arcades and which includes, as if they were side chapels, two other buildings of worship that arose individually: the basilica of St. Restituita, which houses the oldest baptistery of the West, and the Royal Chapel of the Treasury of St. Gennaro, which preserves the relics of the Patron Saint of the city and that will enchant us with the decorations of Domenichino and Jusepe de Ribeira and the magnificent Dome of Paradise frescoed by Lanfranco.
During the second day of travel we will have access to the Unesco World Heritage site of the archaeological excavations of Pompei, the remains of the ancient city buried under a blanket of ashes and lapillus during the eruption of Vesuvius of 79 D. C. together with Herculaneum, Stabia and Oplonti.
One of the best testimonies of everyday life in Rome, among villas, houses, amphitheatres and the extraordinary Forum of Pompei, finely decorated with frescoes, mosaics and statues that allow us to understand the uses, customs, habits and the art of life of more than two millenniums ago.
History, anecdotes, legends and curiosities will be waiting for us at the Cemetery of Fontanelle, another unique site in the world, an ex-ossuary that develops for more than 3000 sqm. and that contains the remains of an unspecified number of people.
The cemetery is known because there was the rite of the “Souls Pezzentelle”, otherwise the adoption and care by a Neapolitan of a particular skull of an abandoned soul, called capuzzella, in exchange for protection.
We will conclude our journey by diving in the heart of Naples, among its streets, in a path that will depart from Piazza del Plebiscito, the square par excellence for Neapolitans where we’ll discover the history and the artistic characteristics of its important buildings such as the Basilica of San Francesco di Paola, the Royal Palace, the Palace of the Prefecture and the Palace Salerno and, crossing the extraordinary Galleria Umberto I (which is inspired by our Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II) built between 1887 and 1890, we’ll arrive at the San Carlo Theatre, one of the world’s most famous and prestigious Opera House.
We will visit the majestic and imposing Castel Nuovo, also known as Maschio Angioino, another symbol of the city that dominates the scenographic Piazza Municipio, fortress desired by Charles I of Anjou and built from 1279.
And finally, crossing the most fascinating squares of the Neapolitan city, from Piazza del Gesù Nuovo to Piazza San Domenico, we’ll arrive at the Chapel Sansevero, a noble mausoleum that houses one of the most beautiful masterpieces of sculpture of all time, the Christ Veiled.
An unforgettable journey for all lovers of Italian art and history who want to discover (or rediscover!) Naples, a charming city rich in traditions and treasures, and Pompei, a city suspended in time, an experience with incomparable historical charm.
